In one community where we are working, families face economic challenges of the hardest type. Many cannot even afford to have their children live with them because they are an extra burden to the family. We seek to improve the education available to children and to make that education accessible to the poorest of the poor.
Children in rural areas face a high probability of working in agriculture/labor at a young age if they do not receive an education. They become part of the family workforce. Without education children of backbreaking agricultural work are also at risk of bonded labor (a form of slavery) or sexual exploitation. By attending an accredited school, they have the opportunity to break out of the poverty cycle.
In another community, the oppressed have been told the same story their entire lives: whatever your lot in life, there’s no way out. An oppressive caste system robs people of hope and perpetuates poverty that creates malnourished children, drug addicted teens, and parents crushed under the weight of trying to provide. Few, if any, have even heard the name of Jesus. But, a national leader with a passion for the oppressed and a vision for holistic transformation is courageously planting a church and already has over 30 people who've met Jesus for the first time. Though born and raised in another religion, Jesus changed his life and is now using him to impact this community. Your help empowering this local changemaker can make all the difference. Imagine what Jesus can do among the oppressed if they can meet and experience Him!
We are working with local ministry leaders and other leaders in these communities to facilitate transformation. Through partnering with a local church-based NGO that operates numerous schools in the region, we opened a school in 2013 that educates approximately 400 students, twenty percent of whom receive scholarships and could not receive education otherwise. Having access to quality education is changing children’s future and helping to transform this community. As a result of this school’s presence, some local businesses have opened and a physician has moved into town and is providing medical care.
In another village we are planting churches that can move people beyond the oppressive systems they have always known and discover freedom in Jesus. We are working with local leaders and believers to develop local businesses, create employment opportunities, and work towards opening a community center where we can collaborate to feed malnourished children, launch addiction recovery programs, and make quality education accessible.
We are bringing people together to create a new kind of movement that makes disciples who are transformative agents in their community and multiply so transformation can expand beyond this community’s borders to reach many who have yet to hear the name of Jesus.
